Ferrywise

Ferrywise

When to leave for the boat. A planner for Washington State Ferries crossings on Puget Sound, for Android and iPhone, in development.

Plan a trip

By crossing, day and boat: the next sailing you can still catch, or the latest one that lands before a time you have to be there.

A leave-by time

Computed from the operator's published schedule, your typed drive to the terminal, and, for drive-on trips, the terminal's live car-deck space where the operator publishes it.

A reminder

At the leave-by time, with the lead time chosen by you. On Android this is an alarm the app sets; on iPhone it is a notification, and the app tells you to set your own Clock alarm.

Honest refusals

When no sailing can be caught, or the schedule is not published yet, the app says so and points you to the operator's own service page instead of guessing.

Platform notes: on iPhone, Ferrywise works alongside the Clock app rather than claiming to wake you itself, and reads no location. On Android, two optional features use your position: a one-time drive-time estimate, and a live-tracking mode that follows you to the terminal and sends your position to Google's routing service while it runs. Both are off until you choose them.

The Ferrywise engine

The scheduling logic behind Ferrywise is one shared body of code that runs identically on Android, on iPhone and on a developer's machine, so that both apps give the same answer for the same timetable. It is tested against recorded real schedules and against the operators' live feeds.
